Diamonds are Forever….Right?

Engagement rings.  Chances are you have one, you had one, you’ll get one or buy one.  Engagement rings are a big part of our culture and a big investment… But they don’t have to be.    These days the average engagement ring costs $5000, which is a lot of money for most people, so rather than start your marriage in debt these are my top tips to getting a ring you’ll adore without the price tag.

Budget:  work out what you can afford to spend before you go shopping and stick to it.  Don’t get dragged into thinking you have to spend more.  Getting engaged is not about the ring it’s about your relationship.

It doesn’t have to be a Diamond:  Diamond engagement rings did not become popular until the 1930s when De Beers began an aggressive advertising campaign to boost the sales of their diamonds.  While diamonds are classic and versatile there are other colorless gems that won’t cost you the earth.  The two popular options are white Sapphires and Moissanite, which are both hard wearing like diamonds so a great gem for everyday wear.

Have fun with color:  Don’t be afraid of colored gemstones, which can be a beautiful option for an engagement ring.  Some colored Sapphires can be relatively inexpensive.  Also consider other types of gemstones such as Morganite, Aquamarine and Citrine. However some of these gemstones are not as durable as others so if you are an active person I would recommend a hardier stone.

Shop around:  Most jewelry stores are ridiculously expensive and count on you not knowing your stuff.  Do your research.  Find out the average cost of the stone you want and the price of metal and go from there.  Also don’t disregard the Internet.  www.etsy.com has amazing jewelers that offer incredible rings for an affordable price but be smart and make sure that the ring comes with a warranty and value report so you can get a refund if you are not one hundred percent happy with your purchase.

My final piece of advice is to be unique.  Every relationship is unique and so are you so feel free to choose a ring you love no matter what anyone else says. At the end of the day you are the one who has to wear it!
