About ceevans2014

Welcome to frugalfab.co! Where you can learn my tricks to have a fabulous life no matter what barriers may stand in your way. First allow me to introduce myself, my name is Claire Evans and I am an entrepreneur who makes a living out of being fabulously frugal. Being frugal is not about being cheap, it’s about being smart. It’s about knowing where to spend and where to save, what your strengths are as well as your weaknesses and how to turn anything and everything into an advantage. This website is not just about how to make the most of your pennies but also your time and energy so you can better your life and live your own personal dream. It wasn’t too long ago that I was a lost little soul wondering what to do with my life. I was in my late 20s and at that age where suddenly you realize the party’s over and you have to grow up. The only problem was I didn’t know who I was and therefore what I wanted from my life. I knew I wanted “stuff” but I didn’t have a plan as to how to get that “stuff” (other than putting it on the credit card). It wasn’t until I starting seeing an amazing life coach who gave me a road map on how to become who I am today. This gift is what I want to give to every person out there. frugalfab.co is about my own personal journey to fabulousness, which I hope may also inspire you to become your own frugally fab self!

Cooking with Billy…The Goat

goat

Lately my supermarket has started stocking goat meat which I am super excited about! I’m always on the look out for new and interesting proteins to add to my diet and goat is a fabulous meat to cook with.  I read recently that around 80% of meat consumed in the world is goat which means that there must be some fabulous recipes out there! It is also low in cholesterol and saturated fat and high in Iron and B vitamins, all the more reason to add it to your diet.

Goat tastes similar to lamb or mutton but slightly more gamey and best paired with other strong flavors.  Because of its low-fat content it is best cooked on a low heat for a long time with plenty of moisture.  I personally like to put it in my slow cooker as it means I can leave it to do its thing while I get on with my day.  My favorite recipe is to add some rendang paste, a cinnamon stick, some star anise, potatoes and peanuts to a leg of goat and pop it in the slow cooker for at least 12 hours.  Super easy, super tasty and super cheap!

So if you have access to some fabulous goat meat I urge you to give it a try!

GlamGlow Review

glamglow

Unless you’ve been living under the proverbial bus you’ve probably heard of Glamglow masks as it has won every major beauty award out there.  So after much debating with myself I decided to buy the Glamglow youth mud.

Pros

  • Glamglow has four powerful masks and an eye treatment which suits every skin type
  • The Glamglow website has a sample pack where you can purchase single use versions of every mask to try before you make the investment
  • It’s simple to use and not too much mess
  • My skin felt much smoother and clearer after use
  • Unlike most masks my skin did not react or breakout which is fantastic!

Cons

  • Glamglow masks are not cheap.  They retail for $69

Overall it’s one of those products that is a nice optional addition to your skin routine.  I would recommend it to people who wear makeup every day and need a good clean out every once in a while or for someone looking for a product that will give them a mini facial before a big night out.  I haven’t used it enough to see if it makes a more permanent difference to my skin so I’ll let you know!

If you are wanting to try one of Glamglows masks I recommend getting the sample set from their website.  For those lucky enough to have Sephoras in their country you can purchase it from one of their many stores and for my New Zealand followers Mecca Cosmetics stocks Glamglow which is where I purchased mine from.

If you do decide to use it I’d love to know your experiences! Also please let me know if there is anything else I should try out there.

Engaged and Loving it!

Sorry for my recent absence everyone but I’ve recently gotten engaged and have since turned into some crazy invitation, dress obsessed monster! I’ve been researching ways to save money while still having the wedding of my dreams so there will be some absolute gems coming your way! This post however I’ve focused on my engagement ring and where you can buy amazing rings online!

My beautiful engagement ring!
My beautiful engagement ring!

My Fiance and I love a good bargain and ring shopping was no exception! We both decided that we didn’t want to spend a ton of money on the ring as we are wanting to buy a house and the money could be better spent elsewhere.  A few months back I did a post on diamond engagement ring alternatives so I decided to heed my own advice and I settled on a pink sapphire.  Pink sapphires are hard to come by in New Zealand so I decided to take a chance and look online.  Pink sapphires are primarily found in Sri Lanka and I found this wonderful business All Sapphires where I bought my stone from.  They actually have an etsy store Rene Jewelry but they have a lot more gems on their website! I wasn’t such a fan of their settings so I eventually found my setting on etsy (gosh I love etsy!) who do amazingly priced settings! Lord of Gems were also able to customise the setting to fit the stone perfectly and all I had to do was get the stone set when they both arrived.  I absolutely adore my ring but what I love most about it is the fact that we didn’t have to go into debt to purchase it.  If your smart and shop around you don’t have to spend a lot on a fabulous ring and you can always upscale your ring in a few years when you have more to spend!

Speakeasy Bar at Hotel Muse

The-Speakeasy-Lawn

This is one of my favorite bars in Bangkok as I love the atmosphere. Set at the top of hotel muse, the Speakeasy oozes class with jazz music in the background, amazing food and drinks and you can even borrow a smokers jacket and fedora to accompany your cigar.  I thoroughly recommend the ginger creme brulee as it was to die for! This is a great date place so if your in Bangkok and want to go somewhere a bit romantic but not cheesy this place is fab!

Hotel Review: Hotel Muse

muse hotel bedroom

Located down a one way street near Chitlom station
Pros: Great hotel for those who like more of a boutique vibe.  The best thing about this hotel is the decor.  Dark wood, black marble and gilded picture frames. This hotel makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time to jazz, cigars and drinks a plenty. The breakfast is fantastic with a selection of sushi, fruits, american and Asian breakfast options as well as a separate salad and cheese section.  It also has an espresso machine so you can have a decent coffee with your breakfast. I also felt very safe as unless you have a room key you can’t access any of the room floors. Muse also has a great Italian restaurant Medici in the basement as well as an amazing speakeasy bar at the top. The rooms are beautiful and the staff are very helpful.

Muse hotel Bathroom

Cons: Muse isn’t as close to the train station as some other hotels but they do have a free tuktuk that will drop you at the station. Also for some reason if you use the master switch to turn off the lights then you can’t turn any lights back on until you turn the master on.  This is especially annoying when the switch is on my partners side and I want to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. There is only a power socket on one side of the bed.  But these are only little gripes as this is probably one of my favorite hotels I’ve stayed in.

Hotel Review: Intercontinental Bangkok

intercontinental-bangkok_131220121007213889

Located in the heart of the shopping district next to Gaysorn mall and Chitlom station.

Pros: Although a bit older the rooms are great, good attention to detail including a turn down service and a good supply of complimentary bathroom items.  Great buffet breakfast that includes sushi, dumplings, a pork free egg station as well as american breakfast items. The convenience of the sky train is why I decided to stay there which is right outside!
Cons: One of the more pricey hotels I’ve stayed at and I don’t think its any better than some of the more economical options. Room service food is terrible. Don’t bother. It has a very commercial vibe which I don’t like being such a large hotel.

Hotel Review: Novotel Platinum

novotel

Located in the heart of the shopping district in Bangkok and above platinum mall Novotel Platinum is a good option for those looking for an affordable hotel in the shopping district.
Pros: Price, location to malls (above platinum mall, five minute walk to zen and central world, ten minute walk to sky train station chit lom, 15-20 minute walk to paragon mall and siam station), cleanliness and nice modern rooms.
Con’s: Hotel can be a bit industrial, food wasn’t that amazing.
